16 Days of Activism

As part of the 16 Days of Activism CARE awarded a goat to the winning team of a soccer game between two areas of Rhino Camp Settlement. CARE also provided the balls and uniforms.

We are in the middle of “16 Days of Activism Against Gender Based Violence” with plenty of activities in the settlements to promote awareness. “16 Days” is observed around the world every year, but like other International holidays and observances, not so much in the United States. A great deal of focus is about Sexual Gender Based Violence (SGBV) including forced early child marriage, rape, and sexual harassment. Other forms of GBV include economic and psychological violence. From what I have observed going on state-side, maybe this International observance should get more publicity.

I have gone to a few trainings of “Role Model Men and Boys”. The participants are selected by their local communities and usually chosen because they already have volunteered in various capacities and have good reputations. I talk a little bit about harassment and parenting.  One of my favorite and most effective exercises from the trainings begins by dividing into two groups. The first group makes a list of all the activities of the wife in a normal day, while the second group documents the typical day of the husband.

Wake at 6:30 a.m.

After their training the men will try to undertake changes within their own households such as taking on more of their wife’s chores, letting her share in decision making, or spending quality time with the children.  After a few months, CARE will assist these men as they reach out and engage ten other men targeted in their community. It is not unusual for the neighbors to speculate their local Role Model Man has been “bewitched” but theoretically they should notice a happier family.

Sometimes planned programs get disorganized when there is a food distribution, attracting hundreds if not thousands. We try to learn the schedules ahead of time but they don’t always adhere to them. I am reluctant to openly take photos here.

Ration cards are used and now we are implementing cash transfers, which are recognized in the humanitarian community as efficient and secure. Gender Based Violence often happens when the husband in charge of the family’s ration card sells food for cash so he can buy liquor.In their reports, CARE staff frequently write “ratio” cards.

In 2012, if a fortune teller told me that in less than five years, my boss would be Donald Trump, I would wonder what possessed me to go on The Apprentice (I’ve seen maybe half of one episode). Further, if that fortune teller said another of my bosses would recently be the CEO of Exxon, I’d be asking for my money back. But here I am; life just keeps throwing curves.

While my application to volunteer was pending, I attended a Peace Corps function at the University of Denver. The assistant to the Director was the main guest, and commented that the Peace Corps was a rare agency because “it has always has friends on both sides of the aisle”. Yet, I think we can all agree, these look like different times.

So what does Trump mean for the future of Peace Corps? Internet sleuthing doesn’t come up with anything more than speculation on Reddit. Beyond his expressed sentiment during the campaign to reduce foreign aid, as far as I could find, Trump has never mentioned the Peace Corps.

In a Kaiser Family Foundation study published in early 2015, the average respondent thought that 26 percent of the federal budget went to foreign aid. More than half of the respondents thought the United States was spending too much on foreign aid. In reality, the amount spent is slightly more than 1%– $50.1 billion out of $4.15 trillion. Of that, $18.1 billion is for Economic and Development Assistance. Seven African countries, (including Uganda) feature among the top-10 recipients of economic assistance, ranging from $400-600 million. The Peace Corps annual budget is $410 million, which supports 7,000 volunteers. The avowed goal has been to increase this to 10,000 volunteers. The Peace Corps three goals are education and training in interested countries for sustainable results, representing the face of America to the people we serve, and ( like my blog), to promote a better understanding of these countries to Americans. These goals are not capital intensive like buying and supplying equipment, goods, or weapons. I do have to keep track of how many people I train in my sessions, so the Peace Corps can quantify totals to justify it’s existence.

The National Peace Corps Association has been urging RPCVs to write to Trump’s transition team to explain why the Peace Corps is needed. It also gleaned some information about proposed members of his cabinet.

Most of the attention on proposed Secretary of State, Rex Tillerson, the ten-year CEO of Exxon, has been about Exxon’s role on climate change, and his warm relationship with Russia. But Tillerson also oversaw ExxonMobil Foundation’s contributions to global development efforts in over 90 countries, through partnerships with a wide range of leading government agencies, NGOs and companies in development, including some which also partner with the Peace Corps. I get the heat, heat

The occasional cloud is sweet….

The heat has been unrelenting. Every day has been in the low to mid 90’s. This week my weather app is predicting the high 90’s for Bugiri. (Kampala and this blog’s weather app are cooler) It has been the hottest since I have been here, and Ugandans tell me it is exceptional. Usually it was not higher than the high 80’s. The last rainy season was pretty sparse too, compared to the fall before, which totally confused me about when the rainy seasons and dry seasons are supposed to be. The heat is not intense like Phoenix or Vegas, nor humid like Chicago. It mostly compares to …Denver! Since moving to my new home in May, I have had access in the courtyard to a tap, and so far it has held up. I have little doubt they are restricting water at my old bore hole. When I am with Matthews on the motorcycle on a dirt road, and a truck goes by we often pull over until the dust settles. I will be grateful for at least a little bit of rain to tamp down the dust, but its not in the forecast. Meanwhile I understand Denver and the rest of America (Trumpistan? per Krugman) has been getting more snow, thanks to the warmer North Pole.

The other day the taxi I was in nearly rolled off the road. Everyone pushed to get out to the right, which I feared would finish us. It doesn’t look too bad here.

My org ATEFO continues to work with youth groups and their businesses, which were each provided the equivalent of $100US working capital in two installments. Last week the funding conduit, Bantwana World Education, sent representatives out with the ATEFO trainers to see how the groups were doing. ATEFO is supposed to be sure each group has a constitution registered in the District (amazing how important this is), a business plan, adequate record keeping, and a viable business. These are 15-18 year old village kids, many with little education. Girls are often married with children. I think this is a pretty serious challenge for ATEFO. Problems include attrition in the membership; inadequate support from caregivers; not following the rules in the constitution (but many can’t read English); not changing written business plans; caregivers or patrons actually running the business; and “eating the capital” and/or disappearing. Groups who wanted to grow and sell vegetables were damaged by the drought. Not to say there weren’t successful groups. A few groups have successfully changed their business midstream. Besides growing and trading vegetables, businesses I saw included rearing poultry, pigs, or goats, candle making, soap making, brick making, and rice selling,
I was pleasantly surprised that the Iganga trainers took my simple model for a cash book and printed out pages to give to their groups. But a couple of groups were making the same recording error, leading me to suspect their trainer didn’t quite have the handle on it.
This project also had a requirement to dig 600 backyard gardens. They are not digging drought resistant permagardens however, so they are struggling in the drought. Too bad. I am quite anxious to see the permagarden I dug with Carson and Becky in our efforts to recruit them to “our way”. Hopefully, I’ll get to see it this week. I spent a good part of Saturday night chasing this guy in my place. He was rather sluggish, having been poisoned by Margaret, but ultimately I recruited the oldest son, Juma to help catch it. I am too much of city boy, I guess. I miss ol’ Meowri at times like this.

Azedy has to water his orange seedlings twice a day. He has 18,000 of these seedlings, I hope he can sell them.This his son, also named Azedy. They don’t call him Junior.

Azedy has hired people to “bud” the seedlings, grafting orange buds onto the lemon seedlings. They are doing 6.000 grafts per week for three weeks. The leaves at the top are still lemon, providing nutrients until the grafted orange buds produce their own leaves. Then the lemon leaves are removed. This makes hardier orange trees.

Farmer Dave

On the right is a key hole garden. Dave was growing collard greens, kale and coriander. When he returned after our trip, pigs had escaped their pen and totally destroyed it. He thinks they like kale. On the left is a hugelkulture garden. He buried timbers which soaks up water so the roots continue to be nourished during dry season. It is growing collards, beans and peppers

After two nights at Karen’s tea plantation, we stopped in Fort Portal. It’s the closest big town to Karen and David and gets a lot of tourists on their way to national parks.

Karen dislikes football, and chose to stay at a hotel for Sunday night.David has great internet reception at his site, a large demonstration farm on the top of a hill. We went to bed early, and then streamed the Super Bowl beginning at 2:30 a.m. Monday morning.A glorious victory for the Broncos!

David had a career as a graphic designer in the states, though he “woofed” at some farms in recent years (room and board in exchange for labor). He calls Wisconsin his home state, lived in Pittsburgh for many years and most recently he lived in North Carolina He has dug eleven different gardens on his site. (My own permagarden is a disaster in mismanagement and neglect- except for the carrots. Matthews transplanted my cabbage and my broccoli did not grow. I’ll do better next season.)

Dry season is intense out in the west, with only negligible rain since Christmas. Dave’s place had a dry water tank, so no bathing that night.

Deep Forbidden Lake

The view of Lake Bunyonyi from Tyler’s front porch. About 60 PCVs came here for Thanksgiving. About 60 PCVs posted this same view on their FB or Blog. Unfortunately it was hazy for us.

 

We left Omwani Cafe and headed to the town of Kabale and beautiful Lake Bunyonyi. Karen, David and I agreed it was the worst taxi ride we had ever taken in Uganda, with either 24 or 25 people crammed together. David and I were jammed in the back row, my knees ache in memory. Two boys next to me were spitting up into a bag.

The climb up the hill to Tyler’s place is steep and a bit challenging. Even harder going down as Karen demonstrates her crab walk. (I hope she forgives me for printing this 😉 )The picture does not do it justice. You have to watch the loose dirt, but Tyler assured us it is worse during rains.I wouldn’t enjoy this at night.

Lake Bunyonyi is in the southwest corner of Uganda near the Rwanda border  It is over 6.000 feet in elevation. It is a volcanic crater and the second deepest lake in Africa, 29 islands are scattered throughout the lake.

We met Tyler at her site and spent a night there. (She was Rosie the Riveter in the Halloween photos). Tyler is from Washington state and a Health volunteer. She is a wonderful host and very level-headed.

After we snooped around a couple of nearby resorts while Tyler did some work, we took a boat ride to one of the islands to have a nice lunch at a restaurant.

On the way we saw a small island in the distance with a solitary tree. It is called “Punishment Island”. Per Wikipedia:
The Bakiga used to leave unmarried pregnant girls on this small island with a lone tree – to die of hunger or while trying to swim to the mainland (swimming skills were rare). This was to educate the rest, to show them not to do the same. A man without cows to pay the bridewealth could go to the island and pick up a girl. Another island was a colony for lepers.
We enjoyed a leisurely afternoon at the restaurant chatting with three girls who were independently traveling the world. They had joined together temporarily and were heading to Rwanda the next day. The American mentioned she saved her travel money by working at Google in Silicon Valley. There are 16,000 employees on that campus, but It turns out her desk was next to a guy who dated Tyler in college. They had a hoot sending him a selfie via Facebook.

I had seen these “Keep Bunyonyi Blue” stickers around town. Just found out they are Tyler’s creation. She has also done some interesting art work on her walls which I might try to replicate.

Then it was back to Kabale, where we had dinner with Ron in a Fossils reunion. Ron bikes eight kilometers round trip to work each day and does yoga. He has lost 25 lbs, in Uganda,

The next morning we caught a 7 a.m. bus. Karen and Dave split off a couple of hours later, while I stayed on to Kampala, where I changed to a taxi and got back to Bugiri by 9 p.m. I was happy to see Meowri was still OK, and in fact my neighbor kids got their own kitten!
Dry season is hitting hard now. There was no rain my entire trip and I have to start getting to the bore hole at 6 a.m. again.

Imagine the water consumption for a family. It gives fresh perspective on this precious resource. Dry season is getting here more and more. The Jerry cans are 20 liters, which is 44 lbs.

My latest round-up of the miscellaneous. My brother is on vacation so my less skilled photo posting is back this week.

We are in transition from rainy to dry season. It hasn’t rained more than a smidgeon in three days. The red clay roads get dusty from passing motokas (motor cars) and boda bodas (motorcycles). We were told not to wear contact lenses, and it’s easy to see why. It’s in the low 80’s and seems pretty hot to me, but it will get much hotter. An electric fan is on the top of my list of acquisitions when I move to my place in Bugiri.

My home stay father Simon’s school is across the road from my home. Last week I told the kids in the playground “I am Charley” (not “muzungu” -what Ugandans, especially children, call strangers, usually white strangers). Now when I go by, the kids in the playground run to the fence calling “Charley, Charley” and I am obliged to go to the fence and give each one a fist bump (bonga). Sometimes I cross paths with one of the kids walking outside the school yard and they’ll say “Charley”. Nick says it’s like I’m like a rock star! Sadly, in America, old men interacting with children on the playground are not considered rock stars.

Innocent sometimes ties dead leaves around a wadded up plastic bag to use as a soccer ball. The other day I brought out a yellow tennis ball I’d picked up at the market. Now about every other day I will bring it out to bounce back and forth with the three kids and Jordan, a neighbor, on the newly cemented courtyard. They don’t catch it well, so usually there is a mad scramble after a miss. The one who misses retains the privilege of throwing it back to me, or there will be crying. They all actually throw it pretty well. Sometimes I sit in the shade and let them play among themselves. Almost immediately it turns into soccer.

There are some real environmental issues here. They cut down lots of straight timber to help with construction, supporting new roofs or floors, but don’t re-use them, choosing instead to burn them for cooking. .Here is an example of the use of timber in a building in Jinga (source of the Nile), where we went Saturday.

I met Trevor, 18, one of Simon’s sons from his other wife. Trevor remembers when it was cooler. It’s not just from climate change, it’s from the deforestation to support the construction and cooking (which of course does contribute to climate change). He tells me there used to be thicker forests in our neighborhood as recently as ten years ago. Ken from the Peace Corps, who is handling language teaching this week, tells me that Iganga is every bit as hot a my soon to be new home in Bugiri, but in Bugiri they have cut down even more timber. Hard to find shade he says, but similar heat when you are walking down the road.

There is trash everywhere on the roads. It’s far worse than my daughter’s room back home :-). Actual trashcans are non-existent, even for my room.I use the flat lid from my bathing bucket and take my trash to a refuse pile about thirty yards away.

Could I get my new neighbors to use trash cans? Where would it go then? Probably another refuse pile, but at least the streets would be cleaner. They were burning refuse at our school today and the smoke was finding its way inside. I was breathing through a neckerchief.

There is a TV in the living room. Hellen, Sharon and Edith enjoy watch soap operas from Uganda, India, The Philippines and apparently Mexico, though I have yet to see a Mexican soap opera. When Simon is here, he watches a little BBC but mostly local Ugandan news and Al Jezeera. I had liked watching Al Jezeera’s coverage of the Arab Spring a couple of years ago. It’s pretty good, sort of like CNN used to be. Much coverage last week about the Greek financial crisis, From the U S we got coverage about the Confederate flag controversy. When he flips through the channels I see Fox News float by. Is it an international version? I guess I don’t care to see.

Uganda TV is in the middle of transition from analog to digital. Last week a court enjoined shutting off analog because not enough people had purchased the converter boxes. There are 3.2 million TVs in Uganda, 70% in Kampala and its surrounding communities. Simon has a pay TV arrangement, receiving his signal via a tall antenna pole, not a dish.

I’ve been using cursive when I take notes in language class. My fellow trainees tell me they were never taught cursive. I had no idea, I guess it makes sense in the world of the internet. I have had Ugandans help me with language who read my notes and do not know cursive either. They re-write my Lasoga words and they are often the same as my cursive.

When we went to Jinja on Saturday, a local volunteer took us to a Mexican restaurant. They had a well-stocked all-you-can eat Taco bar for 12,000 shillings (about $3.45 US). Our gluttony was disgusting. While the Ugandan food is so repetitive, so is Mexican food, and frankly the food in most of the world I suppose. We do agree the white rice here is the best we’ve had. They sort it on a plate before cooking to remove pebbles. I have developed the habit of smashing everything carefully with my tongue, as chipped teeth are an unfortunate hazard here.

Before I move out on Monday, my family wants to go downtown for a portrait of all of us to hang in their living room. They are already saying they will miss me. The feeling is mutual. They have been fantastic.
