The Dirty Jobs

My sister suggests I stick with my roommate since he was able to walk from Sudan to Uganda and I couldn’t find my way to the hotel from the airport.

Orientation is over, we leave tomorrow. This is a pretty bright and energetic group. Apparently two people of the 49 backed out and did not show up for orientation, but I don’t know which sectors.

Dirty JobsI spent most of the flight to Philadelphia and Saturday night reading about 34 job opportunities in the Agricultural Sector, given to us a few days ago. No guarantees, but we will competitively “bid” on our top three choices.

For six months, we have been warned constantly: If a volunteer is ever caught driving a car or a boda boda, he will be terminated and sent home. No problem for me, I look forward to not driving, and I never had much desire to be on a motorcycle. However, of the 34 positions in the Agricultural sector (for 25 volunteers), 26 have the following added note: “Riding on the back of a motorcycle may be needed for this position.”  As you might expect, the Health sector (24 volunteers), has one position with this note. I can’t make this motorcycle note an eliminating factor or I will have too narrow of a selection. I can learn to ride and get used to it, and eventually I will probably appreciate it.

My first consideration is whether I think I have the most of the skills required for the job. Some positions are less business advising and more farm advising, or prefer females, or had other eliminating characteristic that stood out. Fifteen jobs made my first cut and warrant further investigation. Next, I will consider their location settings: Rural/Village; Peri-Urban (small towns) or Urban/town. The capital Kampala is the only true city, so “Urban” just means more modern amenities and infrastructure, but it’s still helping farmers. Third, we received summaries of the pros and cons of living in each part of the country. After we submit our choices, we will be interviewed and evaluated during our first week in Uganda, and then be given our assignment.

Our marathon itinerary in case you are interested: We leave Tuesday, June 2, at 9 a.m. by bus to JFK airport in New York > 7 1/2 hour flight to Brussels > 3 hour layover > 10 1/2 hours to Entebbe, Uganda > 2 to 3 hour bus ride to Peace Corps headquarters in Kololo, regarded as the safest sector of Kampala (Peace Corps will contact my children when we safely arrive). I think we get a couple of days to relax and then our pre-service training begins.

This will be it for awhile. In the meantime send any questions or comments to the address located in the Welcome post. Thanks for subscribing!
